About

I’m Lisa, maker, and owner of Cottage Coppicing.

I started Cottage Coppicing by accident eleven years ago!

I never intended to start another business.

In the winter of 2011, I recuperated from a dog bite received during my then dog walking and pet sitting business.

With a shared interest in the outdoors, my dad invited me to join him for a couple of days in a Natural Resource Wales woodland that he was restoring into a working hazel coppice.

I was hooked!

What is coppicing?  Find out more here.

After the first winter, the idea of making products to sell bore out of hate of waste and ever-increasing piles of wood!

Fast forward ten years, and I now spend my winters restoring a local 9-acre ancient semi-natural woodland and the rest of the year in my industrial unit making the products you find in my shop.

I make everything. Self-taught, or should I say ‘Dad-taught,’ I took to woodworking and wished I’d taken it up earlier.

Sustainability is important to me.

All the wood used in my work is from sustainable sources or FSC certified businesses (Forest Stewardship Council).

I coppice the round wood such as hazel, ash, and cherry myself in the woodland I manage.

I occasionally buy in branch wood from local tree surgeons from small garden jobs.

I use ash and oak timber from my local timber yard Wentwood Timber Centre , and American white oak or beech from FSC certified Mon Timber Supplies.

For the most part, I can tell you exactly which woodland the item you have purchased originally came from.

If made from hazel, I can practically take you to the tree itself!

While practical, my products are bought emotionally; customers fall in love with a piece that resonates with them.

Knowing the history of the work is part of that love affair.

Even the elements that I make from bought-in timber have a history; the local timber yard will know the woodland it came out of or the country of origin.

The reclamation yard I buy my reclaimed wood from has a story too.

It is a social enterprise that teaches woodworking to adults with learning difficulties.

All my engraved products are engraved a by a wonderful local company Bespoke Laser UK

Gifts

Treat your loved ones to a handmade gift this birthday, anniversary or special occasion.

Sustainable

Sustainability is really important to me and key to my work.  It is the reason I started Cottage Coppicing in the beginning.  (You can find out more about that here).  All the wood used in my work is from either local sustainable sources or FSC certified businesses.

Round wood such as hazel, ash, and cherry I coppice  myself in Ladyhill Wood.   A woodland I manage voluntarily as a restoration project for my local authority. I also occasionally buy in branch wood from local tree surgeons from small garden jobs.

The ash and oak timber I use is mainly from my local timber yard Wentwood Timber Centre, and any American white oak or beech I use is from FSC certified Mon Timber Supplies.

Handmade

I handmake every item available in the shop in my workshop in Newport, South Wales. From design through to sourcing raw materials to finishing each item and packing and shipping.  (Except where specified).  If made from Hazel, I even coppiced it in the woodland I manage locally.

I will periodically showcase other makers work in the 'Guest Maker' section.
