Work experience

Inspiring the next generation

In 2022, Careers Wales approached me to see if I would consider taking on a work experience student.

I was reluctant at first.  I didn't think I had anything to offer.

I don't do a trade.  Although I work with wood, I'm not a joiner or carpenter.  Although I manage a woodland, I'm not a tree surgeon.

There is no pathway from what I do directly into apprenticeships or work.

I work alone and don't have a DBS, so I was worried there would be issues with safeguarding.

And I was even worried about who I'd end up with. I thought it might be the last chance saloon for the 'naughty' kids.

I don't have a problem with 'characterful' children—I have two kids and five nieces and nephews. Still, a wood shop is a dangerous environment.

Most of the tools there can land you in hospital with bits of you in sandwich bags if you aren't careful.

It's no place for anyone who can't follow the rules, can't be calm and measured, can't sit still, or is too inquisitive with their hands.

And, whilst I know accidents do happen, I'd be devastated if it happened in my workshop to someone else's child, regardless of blame.

However, my charming contact at Careers Wales, Yvonne, discussed my concerns.

She spoke to the safeguarding officer at the school. She visited the site to look at the workshop where they would work.

She met every child personally to witness their temperament and spoke to them about the importance of listening and safety.

Three years on, and I'm on my second student.

The first one was for one day a week, every week for the academic year.

The second one was the same for the first year and is now with me twice weekly for a second year.

I love it. I'm thrilled Yvonne convinced me to do it.

My dad taught me everything I know, and it's a privilege to pass that knowledge on to another generation.

The kids have been amazing. They are calm, take instructions well, and are just lovely, polite children.

I've learned that when you can do something, it's easy to think that it is easy to do and that everyone can do it. But that's not true.

Although not a joiner, carpenter or tree surgeon. I still have a lot to offer.

It has given me more confidence in what I do, company, and pride. It has even given me much-needed structure.

The best part?

My first student is just finishing their multi-skills course, where they try all the trades and see what they fancy pursuing in detail.

My second student is signed up to do the same course in September!

They may not go into woodworking long term, but whatever they go into, they will have the experience of going to work, including timekeeping, responsibilities, health and safety, basic maths, and the use of multi-trade tools. They've got a head start on those who haven't had work experience.

I can't recommend taking on a work experience student to anyone highly enough, regardless of the size of your business.

Oh, and I won an award!
